Bio

Alphonse is Adorable Love.

There is a land called Amestris where people can use alchemy, a form of science where you can create almost anything as long as you have the right ingredients to make it. Amestris is also a parallel world to our own, the only difference being that we can't use alchemy ourselves. But more on how the two are connected later. ANYWAY, in a little country town named Risenbool that's in this land, there lived these two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric. Their father was a bastard and left them when they were both really little, so the two were raised by their kind and loving mother, Trisha. The father was a well known alchemist, so it was no surprise that his sons started to read his old books and started practicing alchemy too. Since Ed and Al were just kids, all they really wanted to do with their alchemy was make stuff for their mother and show off to their best friend and neighbor Winry Rockbell, who lived with her automail (which is a form of metallic prosthetics) mechanic grandmother, Pinako. One day, when Al was 9 and Ed was 10, their mother suddenly fell deathly ill. It wasn't apparent on the outside, but Trisha had actually been struggling from the same illness for the past few years, triggered by the sudden disapearance of the boys' father. She soon died a few months afterwards. Ed and Al were suddenly left all alone in the world, with only their neighbor Winry's family to depend on.

Because of their mother's untimely death, the boys decided that day to start studying alchemy alot harder, in order to find a way to bring her back to life. They even trained under the tutelage of a skilled alchemist named Izumi Curtis (whom they begged for guidance when she came to their town and fixed their broken dam) for about a year to gain more skill and knowledge, as well as train themselves in hand-to-hand combat (since alchemy "is a practice of the body and mind", according to Izumi). While she was training the two, she told them not to mess around with the laws of alchemy. Now, there are certain taboos in the alchemy world. Some are put in place for government reasons (like not transmuting gold and such), while others....well, the others are made for the well-being of the alchemist and humanity. One of these taboos were to never, EVER fool around with human life. This is because of equivalent exchange, the main law of alchemy that states that you can only get something if you give something of equal value in return. Human transmutation was forbidden because there was no proper price to pay in order to obtain a human life. The brothers decided foolishly to break this rule, since they were naive enough to think the taboo was only in place because other people just haven't tried it yet. One fateful day, after months and months of studying and research, they finally found the right method to bring back their mother. Or so they thought.

They drew out the transmutation circle. They added all the right ingredients to make up a human body. They added a bit of their blood in exchange for their mother's soul. And then they activated the circle.

At first, they had thought they succeeded. But then the transmutation rebounded upon the two, causing devastating results on the boys' bodies. While Edward lost his leg to the freak reaction, Alphonse ended up losing his entire body, and blacked out. When he woke up, he found his bloodied brother in a corner, clutching what used to be his right arm. It turned out that when Al disapeared, Ed, in an act of desperation, gave up his right arm in order to get his brother's soul back, and managed to transmute it into a huge suit of armor that happened to be in the room at the time. In turn, Alphonse Elric ended up with a massive metal suit for a new body. To add insult to incredibly massive injury, the final product of their transmutation could barely be called human. It was a writhing mass of a monster, and most definitely not the boys' mother. Without wasting another second, Al grabbed his severely injured and disabled brother and took him to their neighbor Winry's house, and asked (more like pleaded) Pinako to help save Ed from bleeding to death. Pinako did just that, but not without interigating Al first on what exactly happened.

The next morning, as Ed rests, a visitor by the name of Lt. Colonel Mustang stops by the house, looking for Hohenheim Elric, the boys' father. Roy was interested in recruiting Hohenheim to be a State Alchemist. When he sees Ed, however, and finds out he survived a human transmutation rebound, he offers the invitation to him instead. Ed accepts, and then asks Pinako to outfit him with an automail arm and leg so he can start his journey. After a year of rehabilitation (getting used to his new arm and leg, and sparring with Al to keep his skills in check), he's finally well enough to set out to Central City, where the military is headquartered. Alphonse, being the good responsible little brother he is, decides to join his brother in his journey, in order to make sure he doesn't give up, and because he doesn't want to be separated by the only family he has left. Before the two brothers leave, they burn their home down to the ground, as a promise to themselves that there was no turning back now. At the beginning of their journey, Ed was 11, and Al was 10.

Once they get to Central (after having a brief detour in a town where a disillusioned man tried to bring back his lost love, and a trainahijacking that Ed and Al foiled rather nicely), Ed ends up taking the State Alchemy exam, and passing with flying colors. They stayed with a man named Shou Tucker, who was also a state alchemist, and a bio-alchemy expert. He was also ended up being a complete nutcase, which the brothers learned when they found that he fused his daughter and the family dog together just so he could pass this year's assessment. After he was taken by the military, the boys are left with the responsibility of going through Tucker's data and filing it. It is because of this the brothers stumble upon information of the Philosopher's Stone, a substance that could surpass the laws of equivalent exchange, and quite possibly be the key to getting their bodies back. After finding out that in order to look for something as classified as the stone means being a part of the military, Ed decides to "become a dog of the military" and become a full-fledged State Alchemist, all in the name of getting back their true forms. After Ed gets his offical title (the Full Metal Alchemist), he and Al set out to search for leads on the Stone, and hopefully obtain it for themselves.

In the course of four years, the brothers chase after rumors, get tangled up in military conspiracies, find out the horrible truth behind the Philosopher's Stone (that it's made at the rather large sacrifice of living people) and invoke the wrath of the people who are behind the Stones, which are the Homunculi (failed human-transmutations that are given new life as semi-monsters thanks to incomplete Stones) and their leader, a woman named Dante who also happened to be Hohenhiem's former lover long ago. Their journey reaches a climax as Al's metal body is transmuted into a Philosopher's Stone, and Dante and her group of Homunculi face off against Ed in order to use the Stone that formed inside Al. Ed ends up being killed by one of the Homunculi, and Al, refusing to let his brother die, ends up using all of the Stone in his body to bring both Ed's body and missing limbs back. While this succeeds in bringing Ed back to life, Al disapears, which Ed isn't going to take sitting down. He makes quick work defeating the other villians, and then decides to transmute his entire body in exchange for bringing back his little brother, flesh body and all. This is where the two parallel universes come in. Whenever someone attempts a Human transmutation, they are brought to what is called "the Gate." Ed had already seen the Gate before (when he first lost his limbs/Al's body), but what he didn't find out until much later was that beyond the Gate is a different world (which happens to be our world), but in order to get past there, a great sacrifice must be made. Ed's transmutation to bring Al back to his original form worked, but at the cost of Ed ending up in Germany in our world, and Al back to his 10 year old body, not to mention Al's memories of everything that happened the night he and Ed attempted to bring back their mother. Determined to find out where Edward went, Al asks his old teacher Izumi to retrain him in the ways of alchemy so he could be back with his brother once more.

3 years pass, and Izumi passes away due to her frail health. Before she dies, she tells Al that she has taught him everything he needed to know, and to go off to start looking for Ed. Al does just that, and sets out in the desert to Liore, a city that might hold some clues to where his brother might've gone....

Personality-wise, if Ed is yang, then Al is yin. As opposed to his fiery headed, short fuse brother, Al tends to be more calm and perceptive, often holding back Ed when he's about to do something completely reckless. He is impossibly sweet, as he is always kind, polite and gentle to most of the people that he meets. He's also very trusting and a tad naive, seeing the good in just about anyone or anything, which can sometimes lead to trouble if things don't go as planned. It's very rare to see him extremely angry, as he tries his best to understand people and think from their perspective. However, just because he's not the type to pick fights like his more hot-tempered older brother doesn't mean he's a pansy. Ooooooooooooh lordy no. When the time comes to defend himself or protect those around him, Al will not hestitate to lay the smackdown on whoever tries to harm him or his friends. He's actually the better hand-to-hand fighter of the two Elrics, Edward himself admitting that he has never won a sparring match against his younger brother. His alchemy is also on level to Ed's, and after getting his human body back, he gained the ability to transfer a portion or all of his soul into inanimate objects and controlling them to his will, though only for a temporary time. Al is incredibly loyal and devoted to his elder brother, and is constantly looking out for him so he doesn't lose track, do something completely stupid or get himself killed. While it isn't a brother "obsession", as most fans like to show it off to be, he respects Ed a great deal, even if he does scold or tease him sometimes. Al is Ed's partner through and through, though, and wherever Ed will go, Al will follow to support him.

One last note to mention about Al is that he has a weak spot for stray animals, namely kittens, and occasionally tries to take one or two or the entire Island's worth back home with him. Of course, his escapades are always thwarted by Ed, but it doesn't stop him from trying.

As to what our little alchemist was doing before the Island swept him away, he was in the middle of walking in the desert between Dublith (where his former teacher lived) and Liore when the Island decided to pull an LOLSANDSTORMONOES on him and when it cleared, he ended up here. Because this is movie!Alphonse, he pretty much won't know anyone from his canon here, except for Ed, due to his memories lost when Ed brought him back to his original form. However, he does know, from what he was told by Winry and others after he was recovered, that he was on a journey with Ed for the past 4 years, but none of the exact details and people he had met. But really, all the people have to do is tell them they met him on his journey, and he'll understand, though he just won't remember what they did.
